A group of councils in north Scotland has kicked off a search for a contractor to build a £150m energy-from-waste plant.

Aberdeen City Council, working with Aberdeenshire Council and Moray Council, published a notice in the Official Journal of the European Union for the design, build and operation of a facility to process an estimated 150,000 tonnes of municipal refuse a year.

The 23-year contract is expected to include a three-year construction period.

Planning permission was granted, with conditions, for the East Tullos plant in October 2016.

Aberdeen City Council said the facility would help the city comply with national regulations that will ban Scottish councils from putting biodegradable municipal waste into landfill from 1 January 2021.

Contractors have until 20 March to express an interest in the contract. Up to five firms are expected to be shortlisted in May.

Construction News reported last week that commercially sensitive details of a major Balfour Beatty contract to build an energy-from-waste plant in Gloucestershire had been inadvertently released following a blunder by Gloucestershire County Council.
