I have an excellent opportunity for a Sub-Contract Buyer to join a leading Main Contractor on a permanent basis, based out of their offices near Redhill, Surrey.

The company are a Major Main Contractor that work on a range of new build and refurbishment projects in a number of sectors including healthcare, education, private and public residential and student accommodation, and commercial markets.

They are looking for an experienced Sub-Contract Buyer that has experience of procuring general construction sub-contract packages such as groundworks, RC frame, curtain walling / cladding, brickwork, scaffolding, M&E, carpentry & joinery, ceilings and partitioning’s and finishing trades.

Package values range from £1000 to several million for major packages, with typical overall project procurement budgets of up to £30m. Typical project values are between £10m and £40m in new build and major refurbishments in the education, private and public residential and student accommodation and commercial markets. The Sub-Contract Buyer will be working on up to 4 projects at any given time, from pre to post contract, report to the Supply Chain Director and be working alongside other Sub-Contract Buyers and Procurement Assistants. The role is office based, with site visits required when necessary.

Role Overview:

  • Working in consultation with the pre and post-contract project management team, develop and implement the project procurement strategy aligned to the business supply chain management and procurement policies & procedures
  • Lead the development of sub-contract works packages
  • Work with the business supply chain manager in the development and implementation of approved tender lists
  • Own and maintain the project Procurement Schedule
  • When providing pre-construction procurement support, assist with analysis of quotations, lead negotiations with prospective sub-contractors and suppliers, attending mid/post tender interviews where required, to develop robust, commercially competitive procurement solutions for inclusion in the bid
  • Tender enquiry management, analysis of returns and recommendations for best value procurement route (including labour, plant and material configuration options)
  • Where required engage with the supply chain to investigate value engineering opportunities and ensure any VE proposed is properly understood and valued prior to submission
  • Placing of Sub-Contract orders and management of the subcontract execution process

Experience:

  • Track record working as a Sub-Contract Buyer for a reputable Main Contractor
  • Experience of procuring general construction sub-contract packages such as groundworks, RC frame, curtain walling / cladding, brickwork, scaffolding, M&E, carpentry & joinery, ceilings and partitioning’s and finishing trades
  • Experience working on new build and refurbishment projects ideally within the education, healthcare, private residential and student accommodation sectors, between £10m and £40m in value, from pre to post contract stages
  • JCT & NEC Experience
  • Be a flexible, agile and dynamic team player with a ‘can do’ solution driven attitude
  • A strong understanding of the construction process and industry standard procurement procedures and a ideally a good understanding of standard construction forms of contract
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills and the ability to factor in both project level and sector level considerations when determining the best value procurement strategy
